It is a harmless but potentially very painful disorder that is the result of specific, common emotional situations.”
Although it is  generally
accepted that emotional stress can increase existing back pain, cause an ulcer or intensify a headache, the diagnosis being presented here is
that the pain sensations being experienced in this disorder are being CAUSED by the psychological state or simply put a person’s thoughts and
emotions, which include repressed emotions.

So your saying this pain is basically all in my head and not in my body?

NO! Not at all, the medical community labels this diagnosis as psychosomatic or psycho-physiological. A psycho-physiological disorder is one
in which physical symptoms are the direct result of psychological or emotional factors. It means that these emotional factors have initiated and
or are maintaining your physical pain. It must be emphasized that even though emotional stress factors have initiated the pain symptoms, these
pain symptoms are very real physical phenomena that hurt, burn, tingle and spasm.

This is what is happening. Your body is going through a physiological change that has been induced by psychological factors. Most if not all of
this activity are occurring at the subconscious level, meaning below your conscious awareness. Consider the opinion of acclaimed best-selling
author and world-renowned pioneer in integrative medicine Dr. Andrew Weil. Dr. Weil has made a tremendous impact on the ways in which
people view healing and health, mind/body interactions and the practice of integrative medicine.
"This is not to say that chronic pain is all in the
mind. Obviously a lot of it is in the body in the form of real, physical distortion of muscle anatomy and physiology. The casual end of the

The Diagnosis That Ends Chronic Pain
soreness and stiffness, that had been present in my body for over half of my life—I just learned to live with. I basically accepted the fact that I
would always have this type of physical discomfort. It really was not  affecting my running too much, and it wasn’t getting worse, so as long as
the 80+ mile weeks and fast times continued I could live with the discomfort.
And then it happened—I had just finished my warm-up and had begun my final long tempo run—a relatively hard 20 miler. It was five weeks
before the White Rock Marathon and my body felt stronger than ever before. The Power Yoga routine that I had been faithfully practicing was
proving to be the final piece of the marathon puzzle for me. I was strong, fast, flexible and ready for my marathon PR. As I crossed Mockingbird
Bridge and my 3-mile marker I felt a sharp pain in my right buttock. My immediate thought was, “what the hell was that,” this was a sensation I
had never experienced before.
Dead smack in the middle of my buttock something was wrong. I had noticed tenderness and soreness on
the outer edges of my buttocks frequently in the past, but this was completely different. This was a sharp pain when I ran, burning discomfort
when I sat down in a chair, and lots of irritation when I drove a car. What were once sub 6-minute miles were now sub 9-minute miles. Daily 12-
milers were now painful, uncomfortable 4-milers.  To make this long running story short, I spent the next three years searching for the cure, the
relief to this mysterious buttock pain. And if it helped my tight lumbar muscles, sore lower back and overall-body stiffness, then that would be
even better.
So the search began, it included medical doctors, physical therapist, chiropractors, acupuncturist, massage therapist, detailed information on
running injuries, and books on energy blocks, chakras and healing light meditations. My diagnosis included: slipped disc, ruptured disc,
curvature of the spine, degenerated disc, pinched nerve, sciatica, tendonitis, iliotibal band syndrome, fibromyalgia, muscle imbalance, leg
length
discrepancy, over-use injury, inflammation, pronated feet and blocked energy. What became very apparent is that no one knew what was really
wrong.
Nobody could identify the cause of these physical pains. And with out a cause there would be no cure, no relief of pain, and no more
perfect, long, fast, endorphin flowing tempo runs.
Finally, a real breakthrough! I was thumbing through books at the local store and noticed a paperback on healing back pain. This book search
was a monthly routine so no big deal, just another book on back pain. As I scanned the pages I was drawn to the words, a new diagnosis for
back pain and major cause of buttock pain. Needless to say this dramatically captured my attention...   -------------------------------------------------------
Excerpt From Introduction:
Can you explain this biochemical process again? I know hat the pain is not in my head but how is this inner tension that is being
generated in my nervous system causing the pain?

Dr. Pert’s research shows us that this inner stress or energy is taking the form of a blockage, which is weakening our system because of an
insufficient flow of peptide signals. Pert says
“blood flow is closely regulated by emotional peptides, which signal receptors on blood
vessels walls to constrict or dilate, and so influence the amount and velocity of blood flowing through them from moment to moment.”
This
has been tested in the immune system where the cells squirt out peptides that can increase or decrease plaque buildup in blood vessels. A
buildup of plaque would then restrict blood flow through the vessels. Dr. Pert’s research is the scientific validation for oxygen deprivation in
these pain disorders.
In Dr. Sarno’s theory, he concluded that the pain was a result of oxygen deprivation to selected tissue. He explains this as;
“in TMS the
autonomic system selectively decreases blood flow in certain muscles, nerves, tendons and ligaments in response to the presence of
repressed emotions like anxiety and anger. This state is known as ischemia, that is, the tissue involved is getting less than its normal
complement of blood”
The repressed emotion is causing tension in our nervous system. This inner tension is the catalyst for oxygen deprivation. Less blood means
that there will be less oxygen available to these tissues and the result is symptoms of pain; tingling, burning, soreness, numbness, and
sometimes weakness. So this intelligent, complex, dynamic, biochemical reaction that is causing our physical pain is initiated by our
subconscious denial and conscious avoidance of certain emotions or feelings. This response is similar to many of the body’s reactions to
stress and tension. They are the result of abnormal autonomic reactions.
It is accepted today by most physicians that ulcers, headaches,
spastic colons and skin rashes are all symptoms of stress or tension. We just have not put this same thinking to pain experienced in our
body...

...This is the part that I don’ t like. I don’ t want to focus on all this emotional stuff!...

...You have learned to avoid, resist, deny, and suppress your feelings. This is the dis-ease that we are creating that makes us unbalanced, that
causes the blocks, the stuck-ness, that ignites our system to go haywire, to misfire in its internal communication. This result is a life of chronic
pain.
Psychologists label this avoidance of emotions as a defense mechanism. You can learn to identify them in yourself and stop the repressing
patterns. Many people think that the problem is with external stresses such as jobs, spouse, where we live, relationships, bank accounts and
over training or wrong treatments. They change careers, move to a different part of the country; find a new mate or change training and
treatments. Changing your life situation does not change the emotional dynamics that are causing the physical pain. It is the internal stressors
or our own unique personalities and how they react to these outside stresses that attribute to the creation of inner tension.
Traits such as
perfectionism, habitual worry, being overly conscientious, the need to please others, controlling attitudes, and the need to strive and be
highly competitive are some of these personal qualities
. Quite often this type of personality will put extra pressure and conscientiousness on
their internal system to perform. Usually more than others would ever expect of them. Many people have stressful jobs and life situations. It’s
the individual who strives to be the best, perform perfectly, impress others, control everything, worry about it and be overly conscientious that is
generating enormous amounts of internal emotional energy.           
Unknowingly this person is also repressing this energy (emotions) through their normal, conditioned behavior patterns. Through this
repression they are creating pain in their body and their life. Read through the following examples of different ways that people avoid
experiencing their emotions. Some of you will recognize familiar patterns in your self, while others may observe these patterns in people that
they know. Both offer a perspective that can be applied to help you become more emotionally aware and help you heal..

The 10-day practice was not in your first book. Is this some thing totally new?
What I discovered is that most people want or need a program to follow. Also, even though people are having great success with this practice,
there are challenges in stopping the repression activity and in “what do I do after I experience my emotional energy, how do I stay mindful, and
what should I feel now” conundrum? I developed the 10-day practice to simplify this process and make it much more enjoyable to continue in
this practice.
Let’s face it, for most of us, experiencing or feeling emotions that we are used to avoiding is not very much fun. And since we
are not enthusiastically doing jumping jacks to keep feeeeling and experiencing our emotions we stop trying and usually revert back to
the old, conditioned repressing patterns or we go into our searching pattern again—more repression.
However, since feeling and
experiencing is how we transform this painbody into a feel good body we need a simple, yet powerful and enjoyable process to keep us going.
So here we go! First we will review the steps to this program that we already know.

The topic this month is Back To The Basics.
The last few months we have went intensely into the emotional aspect of tension-induced pain--and for good reason. However, there is never a
bad time to revisit the Basics of Healing from tension induced pain and probably we should be reviewing weekly if not daily for many.

Basic Principle #1. Accepting the Cause of Pain/Injury as an emotional/psychological cause and not a structural weakness, muscle
imbalance, or over-use injury. What I have discovered is that for those that have experienced the chronic pain/injury for quite some time--1 year
and more. They typically have tried pretty much all the different treatments, took off a lot of time from training/exercise, and experienced
a variety of pain symptoms in different locations. When this segment learns about tension-induced pain, especially when
they fit the type A personality or they recognize the repressed emotional aspect in themselves, they are more accepting of the
diagnosis.
Now, the other segment, experiencing injuries, fighting through them, knowing that they are winning the battles---(they get over the
injuries, even though new ones show up)---they believe with the right exercise, doctor, treatment, and time-off, that they will finally end the injury
cycle. This group will often accept that tension is the cause of some of the pain, but not all. The thinking is-- a physical challenge/weakness is
responsible for at least part of the pain...and maybe the tension is just feeding off of the injury! To this group I say "good luck," you are
going to need it.
The fact is,
this is a pain disorder with a strategy. The strategy is to keep you focused on your body and away from your emotions. So, this
is a Huge deal here. You have a choice to make and truly only you can make it. You either go with the tension induced injury 100% or you go
with treatments/rest/etc. 100%. If you want to make this more than the living hell it can be, just try straddling the fence for a while. And this is the
advice I give many of you. If you take an honest inventory of your pain cycle, and a truthful evaluation of your emotional self and you cannot
accept the tension diagnosis then don't. Go the treatment route 100%. You can always come back to revisit this arena.

Basic Principle #2. You must acknowledge the pain sensations as a Signal to Pay Attention to your emotions/feelings/thoughts. Preferably with
a direct inner question, "What am I feeling right now"? Simultaneously when you do this you automatically Stop "Injury Think". Realize that injury
think plays right into the pain strategy of keeping you focused on your body and how some treatment, exercise, gadget, or doctor is going to fix
your body. When you are able to eliminate the injury think (and it is not going to happen over night) and Genuinely respect and be grateful for the
pain as a signal to take a closer (inner) look into what emotion is trying to be experienced or possibly what repression activity is taking place.
You have set into motion the healing transformation of this process. I really believe the key to what I just explained is that by being genuinely
grateful, you are being honest with yourself and you are expressing to the dynamic going on here that you do Accept the cause. If you can get
yourself to this place of acceptance, and you can, you will heal from this disorder. Ladies and gentlemen this is a Huge part of healing
from this strategy. HUGE!

Basic Principle #3. You must Stop all Treatments. You knew this one was coming. Evaluate some of the things you do as treatments, but you
tell yourself differently. Seriously, give some thought to this. I cannot tell you the number of conversations that I have with people that still get
massages and chiropractic adjustments and some type of physical therapy or special exercises that they swear they are doing these for some
other reason than treating the pain. Well, only you really know the truth, but I can tell you in most cases there is a "Part" of you that is thinking
that just maybe this will fix my pain. And if that thought is there and if you are doing some kind of treatment other than experiencing your
emotions you are feeding the pain strategy and the strategy is winning the war. You may win some of the injury battles, but the war, the chronic
pain war is lost. Understand this point. The pain strategy will allow you to win certain injury battles. Have you noticed that your chronic pain cycle
doesn't ever really stop? You chronically continue to experience injury after injury?
Please revisit #1, and #2 and then #3 again.
