| Cognitive Behavior Therapy (CBT) CBT is the combination of two therapies. Cognitive, which teaches you or shows you how certain “thinking patterns” are causing your symptoms and Behavior, which weakens the “mind pattern connections” between trouble-some situations and your habitual reactions to them. Altering ways of thinking — a person's thoughts, beliefs, ideas, attitudes, assumptions, mental imagery, and ways of directing his or her attention for the better. This is the “cognitive” aspect of CBT. Helping a person greet the challenges and opportunities in his or her life with a clear and calm mind and then taking actions that are likely to have desirable results. This is the “behavioral” aspect of CBT. Example: An athlete will re-evaluate performance goals. Adjusting if necessary. It is important no to set goals that are too overwhelming for an individual performance, as this can result in an increased state of anxiety and a hindered performance. It also can be beneficial to de- emphasize the importance of the competition. This can enhance the potential of allowing an athlete's peak ability to be realized. This type of restructuring of an athlete's thinking patterns becomes a significant component because it allows the individual to interpret differently their competition activation state that they will be experiencing and reduce anxiety. |
| Imagery & Hypnosis: For our purposes we will describe Imagery & Hypnosis as being in a super-relaxed, highly enjoyable state, which energizes, heightens and clears the awareness of the mind. Allowing a more receptive psyche to absorb and retain with maximum impact, the images and suggestions that are presented to it. Realize the subconscious mind does not analyze. It accepts and acts on all suggestions/images which reach it, allowing an individual to rehearse mentally so that the competition performance flows automatically without hindrance. These techniques are not a magic wand that can transform an unfit athlete to reach a personal best. However, they allow individuals to perform to the highest limits of their natural abilities without being defeated by old, negative conditioning or drained by the tension and pressure that can increase leading up to the day of competition. Imagery Example: "now picture and imagine what it feels like to be totally involved in your race... fully and completely absorbed in this moment...flowing in perfect balance, speed and strength...keenly focused, perfectly relaxed, steady and strong and on goal pace...fully enjoying this beauty and harmony of the mind and body being in perfect synch...so crisply focused in the moment,...feeling strong and powerful...and yet smooth and relaxed...and now feeling the depth of your breathing...the huge volume of oxygen coursing through your body...energizing your big hard working muscles..."
