| The Master Practice Root Lock Practice |
| In December of 1999 I had just finished a miserable experience in the White Rock Marathon. My back hips and thighs began tightening up around mile 14 and the remaining 12 miles were slow and painful. At this point in my life I had been experiencing chronic back pain, body stiffness and sciatica for many years and I had never heard of physical pain disorders caused by psychological dynamics. A few days after running the Rock, I decided to try Yoga as a treatment to fix my chronic pain body. I began with a practice of Power Yoga where the primary focus was first on a special breathing technique and on holding locks (muscle contractions) and secondary on the movements (postures). After five months of consistent practice I am 90% pain free. I did not know it at the time but the key to this practice and to my recovery was a combination of the special breathing and the holding of something called the root lock. There is a Sanskrit word moola or mula which means root, source or cause. And another Sanskrit word bandha, which means, lock, shut or close. These words are put together (moola bandha, mula bandha or root lock) and known in yoga practice as the perineal lock. This lock is a contraction of the muscles around the perineal body in men and the cervix in women. On the physical level this is simply the contraction of muscles. You will soon discover that it is much more. It is a powerful, mindful, energetic upliftment! The importance of the root lock should not be underestimated. As you perfect this practice it leads to a realignment of the physical, mental and emotional bodies and has big, huge benefits: 1. Maintaining hormonal balance. 2. Stimulating and regulating the nerves that innervate the lower pelvic region. 3. Rebalances nervous activity in the body. The root lock is an important tool in the treatment of physical diseases and disorders. It has an immediate effect of creating a deep sense of mental relaxation, which relieves most mental and psychosomatic disorders, which are the direct or indirect result of inner stress, tension and anxiety! A Practice that Communicates with our Nervous System The root lock practice unlocks stuck emotional energy. Inherent is this process is the release of physical and mental tensions that have been trapped and stored in our body. Dr. Pert has told us how emotional peptides communicate throughout our system and when inner stresses are perceived our autonomic nervous system responds with a constriction of blood vessels resulting in oxygen deprivation. The root lock practice is how you can deliberately and positively influence communication with the autonomic nervous system. This communication is therapy, which is allowing you to regain and maintain a healthy balance on the physical, mental and emotional planes. The root lock contraction stimulates both the sensory-motor and the autonomic nervous systems in the pelvic region. This pelvic stimulation activates parasympathetic fibers from the neck and pelvic areas and sympathetic fibers from the upper and lower back areas. The overall effect of this nervous system stimulation is to re-balance these two major components of nervous activity in the body. This benefits the endocrine system which communicates its information to our emotional (limbic) system. This practice is focused in the perineum region located at the base of our spine. For those of you familiar with the chakras, you know that the base or root chakra is the source of our support and is also located here at the base of our spine. For those of you not familiar, a chakra is an energetic power center. The state of each chakra reflects the health of a particular area of your body. It also reflects your psychological and emotional well-being. When the energy in our root chakra is open and moving freely it is responsible for good health and vitality. We have a sense of trust and the ability to relax and be still. When this energy is stuck or pinched off it can cause physical problems like piriformis, sciatica, low back pain and irritable bowel syndrome. The foundation of our emotional and mental health is located in this chakra. Family beliefs, tribal traditions and all fears stem from this location. It is here that we are concerned with obtaining personal security. From this motive arise our competitiveness, grasping, controlling, perfecting and worry. I hope that you are beginning to see the correlation of everything that we have been discussing about these dynamic pain disorders are stemming directly from this energy location. This is the foundation of our emotional and mental energy. Our Type A behaviors thrive in the energy located here. Physically i is at the base of our spine which predominantly affects our neck, back, and legs—the foundation of our body and the dominant region for our symptoms in these disorders. The nerve which supplies this region is the pudendal nerve. The interaction of the nerves in the perineum with the brain, autonomic nervous system and the rest of the body are extremely intricate. Despite this broad, complex network with its myriad of emotional communications, neural pathways and physical connections, it is possible to unlock the mysteries of these dynamic pain disorders. The technique of root lock is how we can do just that and the key is practice. The Master Practice Program - Book & CD teaches you the Root Lock technique. |
