Hi Everyone,
For all the many, many gifts that we have been given, none is as powerful as the gift of Choice. Your most powerful gift in life is Choice. Your most powerful gift in reversing TMS is Choice.
So how does choice affect us in TMS? For every choice we make there is a consequence. Many of us define choice at a very elementary level. What should I eat for dinner or what should I watch on television.
With TMS, realize that we make hundreds of choices everyday that are not elementary and they greatly impact our TMS life:
-A choice of our attitudes, thoughts and behaviors
-A choice of our belief system
-What resentments or judgments we keep
-To live in the past or live in the present
-To change or to remain stuck and wait for someone or something to fix us
-It is a choice to believe TMS is a deeply repressed emotions disorder and refuse or deny to change how you are generating inner tension and repressing emotions with your chronic thought and behavior patterns every day
Every one of these choices carry with it incredible potency! We are speaking of powerful energy that can cripple you in pain or unchain your physical demons and set you free. Each of these can occur within a wink of an eye or the snap of the finger!
When we first learn about TMS we choose to Accept it or Not.
When Dr. Sarno told us to Think Psychological and not physical we made a choice to what degree we were comfortable with that change, if at all!
When I tell you it is your day-to-day thoughts and behavior patterns that are not only generating inner tension/stress in your life (cause) but also this is how you are repressing emotional energy (cause) on a day to day basis, you get to choose what level of belief and change to commit to this truth, if any at all!
It is impossible to Think Psychological and think physical dysfunction/injury at the same time. You cannot be open and allowing with a feeling and repress it at the same time. It’s not possible to be in the past if you are in the present moment. If you are making conscious choices you are not on unconscious autopilot. These are all very significant and powerful choices that are making up the threads of your TMS life and are the very reason you are either reversing this disorder or are stuck!
Let’s now put choice into our TMS life as it relates to the speed of healing or reversing TMS. One of the most common questions that I receive is; how fast is this Think Psychological stuff going to work or how quickly can I reverse the TMS strategy and become pain free if I follow this program?
Understand that the Speed at which people heal is equivalent to the speed at which genuine change occurs in their lives! Digest that very potent yet subtle truth. Healing or health manifest at the rate of genuine change!
Why can some people impact the quality of their heath (reverse the TMS strategy) almost instantaneously and for other people, no matter what they do, the transformation of health in their life/body takes a long, long time? What is the difference?
The difference is where they are choosing to invest their energy/attention. People that reverse TMS quickly and efficiently are able to incorporate genuine changes in their beliefs, attitudes and behavior patterns rather quickly and efficiently without becoming consumed in doubt and massively stuck in the fear of change.
The more you can keep your energy in present time the more efficient and effective you will receive health and the quicker you will reverse the TMS strategy. Example, when you choose to invest your energy into worry, pleasing, ambition, trauma or past memory (the quality of this energy is high tension/pressure) you are giving your life energy to these situations. Your energy, rather than serving you in the moment for healing is being directed because of this choice into your history and it is keeping your past alive more than the present moment. Many of you don’t realize that this is a choice and think that it has nothing to do with reversing/healing from TMS, but understand that you are using your past (tension, stress, anger, resentment, attitude, memory) quality of energy to create your present experience. This chronic cycle of generating inner tension and repressing emotional energy results in a chronic cycle of feeding the pain strategy and it feeds the cause/effect consequences of how your are being right now (cause) and what you are experiencing right now (symptoms) in your body.
Keeping your past alive is not a great investment of your energy or your time. The more time you spend in the past (cause of tension) or the more time you choose to be in your chronic thought/behavior patterns (cause of tension) the MORE TIME it takes to create the present moment that you want (health and the reversal of TMS)
When your request, I want to heal my body and reverse TMS, is made, what determines the speed with which you will do this? If you have a history of unfinished business and/or if you have made the choice to remain in old chronic patterns of being – You are enabling the Cause of TMS to manifest and you are communicating to the TMS strategy, I will allow this TMS to heal at the rate/speed that honors the pain of my past and that doesn’t jostle (change to much) the way I am being right now. People don’t want to change too much too fast. Realize though that healing is change and change is healing. This is Truth.
It is a choice to hold onto the past, a choice to genuinely Think Psychological, a choice to be with feelings versus ignore them, a choice to be present more often, to change attitudes, beliefs and old chronic thought and behavior patterns and to challenge and adjust repression activities. Your most powerful gift in reversing TMS is Choice.
TMS is a mind body syndrome. As long as you have a mind and body functioning you are living with the potential to experience all kinds of mind body effects/symptoms.

What causes most people to become stuck in TMS? Without question it is the strategy. A person can accept the mind-body relationship for many of their aches/pains/symptoms but not believe in or understand the strategy! Or a person can accept the TMS diagnosis completely but have no idea how to communicate effectively with it in order to reverse it. Both cases will undoubtedly lead to major stuck-ness and frustration.
The other day I was speaking with a TMS Sarno Veteran of 23 years. This woman has been successful numerous times of ridding herself from TMS pain. The last major back/neck episode for her was 4.5 years ago. We were speaking because she had been struggling the past 8 weeks with a new and slightly different back pain that had been progressively getting worse. For the first month she was convinced it was TMS but now doubts were beginning to surface and she was searching for a new diagnosis, testing out new treatments and looking to speak with anyone else who had experienced the same symptom.
Later the same week I spoke with a man that had just learned about TMS. The TMS diagnosis resonated with him for his back pain but not for the other pain symptoms he continued to struggle with (piriformis, sciatica and plantar fasciitis). He stated that he accepted stress was a part of his back pain, but he wasn't ready to believe that a subconscious strategy was also involved. Physical therapy, special stretches, activity rest and a huge fascination to figure out how all this works was consuming him.
I could provide any number of additional examples of stories from people with all varying backgrounds in mindbody and TMS whose life situations reflect a misunderstanding in the purpose of the strategy and confusion in how to effectively communicate to this intelligent, creative and powerful component of TMS.
Dr. Sarno's absolute genius over 40 years ago was telling us that this pain strategy exist And that the key to reversing it was to Think Psychological and not be distracted/focused on the pain symptoms. Sarno told us that the strategy was in place to protect us from experiencing unpleasant feelings. That of course was correct then and still is today.
As my understanding of TMS has evolved I have found it to be beneficial to expand on the purpose behind the TMS strategy. Yes, the strategy is trying to keep attention away from unpleasant feelings but it is also
working to get your attention focused on how you are being so you can make some beneficial changes. If the strategy was speaking to you today it would be saying, "hey, why are you so uptight, why are you worrying all the time, why are you holding stuff (emotional) inside, why are you striving, perfecting, pleasing and controlling all the time, you are so unbalanced and inflexible in how you are being. I'm going to keep bugging you (back pain, spasms, piriformis, sciatica, neck pain, IBS, migraines, etc.) until you take a look at how you are being and begin to incorporate some changes in your life. I want you to enjoy your life and as soon as you genuinely understand this and really start incorporating more balance, presence, openness, allowing and flexibility into your life I'll leave you alone. And another thing, quit thinking something is physically wrong with you each time you get a new/different symptom. The symptoms are part of this to Signal you to take a look at how you are being. Remember this is mind-body, so the symptom even though it is physical is a Signal to go psychological (how you are being). Here is my promise to you. When you "get this", I mean really Get IT, I'm gone. I may come back once in awhile for a little visit (reminder) when you get off track, but once you Get It, I'm gone"
Strategy Points to Remember:
1) Intelligent - it will pick the perfect moment to initiate a symptom and it will move the symptoms around. Begin believing in TMS and genuinely start Thinking Psychological and it may increase the intensity of your symptom as a way to keep you distracted.
2) Creative - it will find the best way to get your attention. Example: Work at the computer all day? - Wrist pain; Playing music is your passion - Ear challenges; Teaching yoga is your big thing? - no downward/upward dog for you; You figured out back pain is TMS - try this new IBS symptom for awhile.
3) Powerful - Give the strategy an inch and it will take a mile. When you give a little bit of attention, doubt, fear or searching to a symptom you are feeding it and there is no reason for it to subside.
4) The strategy is not going to respond/act the way you think it should. We like to think logical, it should make sense to us, to our way of thinking. This just might be what throws people off more than anything. We have read about TMS, we have experienced it, so now we understand how it works. Well, that would make this much easier if true. However, Realize that we are speaking about two very different parts of our mind at work here. The strategy is part of our subconscious (innermost, intuitive and hidden aspects) and we are trying to understand it and communicate to it as this rational, reasonable, logical or sensible part of us. This type of communication not only doesn't work, it can easily play right into the intelligent hands of the strategy, keeping you distracted with doubts, fear and searching.
Effective Communication:
1) Be confident while you Stop treatments aimed to fix a broken or degenerate body. Instead, you go genuinely psychological with conviction.
2) Be confident while you Resume normal activities while keeping your focus out of fear and away from your body/symptom. If you are in an activity and the strategy has you distracted, stop and go psychological. This is not giving in to the strategy, it is choosing to ignore the body/symptoms and address the cause.
3) Accept and understand that it is this intelligent, creative and powerful strategy that makes this syndrome TMS. Everyone has mind-body experiences and effects, everyone! Not everyone experiences chronic mind-body symptoms in a pain/symptom cycle with the strategy playing the major role!
4) Be really okay with knowing that you are not going to know and understand everything about the how/why/when/where of the strategy in action. You don't have to understand all of the ins/outs of the strategy. Your job is to effectively communicate acceptance of the psychological cause while not being distracted.
5) Your response to pain/symptoms/strategy should be natural and spontaneous with confidence and conviction. What does that mean? It means there is no doubt, no searching or wondering about what is going on. It means pain/symptom is a signal to think psychological with no distraction. What does that mean?
5-A) It means that you automatically, naturally, spontaneously check in with how you are being- (ask yourself what is bothering me, where is my attention, what is stressing me, why am I worrying, how am I feeling). This is your genuine response without an inkling of distraction on the body/symptom or TMS thinking. You know this is TMS, you get it! The strategy is getting my attention so that I can make a change here or there. So that I can be a little more open or flexible or balanced in how I am being.
5-B) Your response could also be, instead of a think psychological question, to be with your feeling, your emotional state and nowhere else. Be with your feeling of (anger, stress, anxious, pressure, frustration, etc) with no thinking and no voices (no investigation, questioning or justifying). Again without even a twitch of distraction going to the pain, symptom or strategy. Since the strategy is designed to protect you from unpleasant feelings, your response is to be with these feelings. This is supreme communication to the strategy that you are not distracted, that you get it!
5-C) Another response could be to get present moment based or mindful of where you are, what you are doing or who you are with. Again this is spontaneous with no searching or doubt about what is going on.
When your responses are genuine because you understand and get it, really get and accept that TMS is a mind-body syndrome with an intelligent/creative strategy attached to it, you will be effective. Remember this strategy is in place to distract you - keep you from unpleasant feelings And it is in place to get your attention, so that you can make some beneficial changes to how you are being. When your responses come from this understanding they are supreme communication back to the strategy that you are not distracted and that you are accepting the Signal to Think Psychological, Be with feelings, Make changes and Get present.
The TMS strategy lives in the past and in the future. The most effective and efficient communication or response from you is one that is mindful and present moment based on your self and how you are being.
Healing one's body or one's life challenges requires daily practice and present moment attention. Master your responses so that they are genuine, natural and spontaneous ways of being instead of trying to control them as a means to fix something that is wrong.

We have many ideas about TMS that are simply not true. One encompasses the logic around 'curing' TMS. I can assure you that there is not a 'cure' for TMS and there never will be. Healing from TMS involves a lifestyle approach and as long as you have a mind and a body you are living a life that will always produce mind-body effects/symptoms and will always have the potential to generate chronic mind-body effects/symptoms that can be classified as TMS. A person that desires to heal TMS symptoms will be best served by accepting and adopting this truth.
Have you heard the adage: "Learn the lessons that life comes to teach rather than resenting the teacher". TMS is a teacher, it is not a punishment! TMS is essentially a learning experience/situation/challenge that has a lesson for us to learn. The big picture lesson of TMS is that something is out of Balance in your life. We are quite fortunate that our mind-body system has an inborn mechanism that seeks balance. Our job is to make some adjustments (minor or major) in how we are Being. What are our big, huge tension generators? Perfecting, Pleasing, Striving, Holding in feelings, Controlling, Being Competitive or Overly self-conscious, Habitual worry? When we are heavy duty in some or all of these patterns we are (1) Generating Inner Tension and we are (2) Repressing or Avoiding our Emotions. Eventually we get the effects of this unbalanced way of being.
TMS, as a teacher, is giving you the opportunity to assess the quality of choices you are making and the consequences (symptoms) that these choices create in your life!
Most people that come to me for coaching or guidance for reversing TMS are looking for a quick fix. I usually represent their final stop. They have been a patient of Dr. Sarno, they have been with a TMS psychologist, went through Dr. Schecther's workbook and/or Dr. Schubiners program. Having experienced cures, successes and lapses, they are now confronted with a new TMS symptom or recurrence of an old one and are hoping for the final bit of information that can ultimately end their TMS struggles.
There is a quick fix! Sometimes very quick and other times not as quick as people would like. Healing from the chronic TMS cycle begins when you can accept that there is not a cure. Healing from TMS continues when you accept, adopt and begin practicing the lifestyle approach.

TMS Roadblocks:
1) TMS Support Groups and TMS Help/Message Boards - Dr. Sarno stated that 'information is the penicillin' for TMS. Dr. Sarno had weekly and monthly lectures to help people understand and have CONFIDENCE in TMS. This was prior to the internet age. These lectures worked because they were weekly and monthly. There was time in between for people to reflect and do genuine inner work. I'm sure he never envisioned someone would be online everyday searching, investigating and analyzingTMS. As well-intentioned as these groups and online sites are, they are keeping people Stuck in TMS. They are helping you Avoid and Deny your emotions, they confuse you, create doubt and they keep you searching/analyzing and investigating. They are your distraction.
Sidebar: I have read one book on TMS, Healing Back Pain, back in 1999. The only TMS book I have ever read. I did not even know that TMS help sites/support groups existed. I literally can tell a person everything they need to know about TMS in 10 minutes. I'm not boasting, I want you to understand that the concept of TMS is quite simple. It is Mind-Body and/or Cause/Effect. Spend your time and energy in making adjustments and bringing balance into your life. Your work in healing your body and life's challenges requires daily practice and present-moment attention to the real cause of TMS. I have successfully used this approach to remain free of the TMS chronic pain/symptom cycle for 12+ years. Don't let the searching, analyzing, investigating, intellectualizing and socializing of the internet Distract you away from your inner work that only you can do. It will keep you stuck!
2) Searching for repressed emotions and believing that finding them is the Cure - Once people accept TMS and begin practicing 'think psychological', this is the place they get stuck. Yes, repressed emotional energy is the main ingredient in TMS. If you have unfinished business in the past then by all means address the past. However, most of the repressed emotional energy in TMS is the day-to-day stuff. We repress/avoid/deny our emotions everyday when we are in our chronic patterns of: Worry, Striving, Perfecting, Pleasing, Controlling, Competing, Being Self-Conscious. This chronic repression that has been going on in your life for the past 10, 20, 30 years or more is the big, huge repression in TMS. This is the Unbalance that TMS has come to help you with. We can easily learn to make small and big adjustments in some areas of our life (thoughts/behavior patterns) that will change everything. It’s hard work but easy to understand if you can get out of the ‘cure me’ mode and into the ‘I get it, I need to make some adjustments/lifestyle mode’.
Sidebar: Sitting with Emotions Practice - page 54 of The Master Practice - This is the most effective and efficient way to spontaneously reverse TMS. Dr. Sarno told us to 'Think Psychological'. Thinking psychological will break the strategy of TMS. You no longer focus on the body/symptoms and instead you go psychological. Sitting with Emotions is how you go psychological for emotional work, however the less you think the better. When you sit with your emotions and shut-off the mind you allow yourself to experience repressed emotional energy. This practice will dissipate the repressed tension energy and it dissipates the compulsion to go back into one of your chronic thinking patterns! This practice is how you EXPERIENCE emotions and it is how you STOP or interrupt your repression pattern. If you will make this practice a genuine part of your life and not a Fix or Treatment for TMS you will begin to understand how the lifestyle approach works!
3) Fear, doubt and rational/intellectual thinking. These are the typical qualities of the person who has not accepted TMS 100%. Again, Dr. Sarno's genius was making us aware of the intelligent Pain/Distraction Strategy associated with TMS. People keep the strategy 'alive' with fear, doubt and rational/intellectual thinking. Fear consumes and keeps you focused on the body and who can fix you. Doubt keeps you searching for a different cause or treatment. Rational/intellectual thinking is the sophisticated way to stay stuck. You can rationalize almost every TMS symptom into a physical cause or dysfunction if you try. The more you rationalize and intellectualize your symptoms the more irrational TMS will respond to you. It's all distraction. Distraction is your enemy and the TMS Strategy's best friend. Belief, Confidence, Conviction and Acceptance are your invisible allies that reverse and defeat the TMS strategy. These are also the qualities that allow you to genuinely live the lifestyle approach to reversing TMS.
Sidebar: Remember that you must address both components of TMS if you want to live without the constant struggle. 1) Communicate to the strategy with confidence and conviction that you accept the TMS, psychological cause. Don’t get sidetracked and distracted by anything outside of you.
2) Address both components of the Cause: A) Repressed emotional energy. B) Your patterns that are doing the repressing.
Remember that TMS is a teacher. Bringing balance into your life is the solution. Make sure you make it a genuine lifestyle solution of change and not a treatment or quick fix!
